Joint morphological-lexical language modeling for processing morphologically rich languages with application to dialectal Arabic
Language modeling for an inflected language
such as Arabic poses new challenges for speech recognition and
machine translation due to its rich morphology. Rich morphology
results in large increases in out-of-vocabulary (OOV) rate and
poor language model parameter estimation in the absence of large
quantities of data. In this study, we present a joint
morphological-lexical language model (JMLLM) that takes
advantage of Arabic morphology. JMLLM combines
morphological segments with the underlying lexical items and
additional available information sources with regards to
morphological segments and lexical items in a single joint model.
Joint representation and modeling of morphological and lexical
items reduces the OOV rate and provides smooth probability
estimates while keeping the predictive power of whole words.
Speech recognition and machine translation experiments in
dialectal-Arabic show improvements over word and morpheme
based trigram language models. We also show that as the
tightness of integration between different information sources
increases, both speech recognition and machine translation
performances improve
Kibra Functions as a Tumor Suppressor Protein that Regulates Hippo Signaling in Conjunction with Merlin and Expanded
SummaryThe Hippo signaling pathway regulates organ size and tissue homeostasis from Drosophila to mammals. Central to this pathway is a kinase cascade wherein Hippo (Hpo), in complex with Salvador (Sav), phosphorylates and activates Warts (Wts), which in turn phosphorylates and inactivates the Yorkie (Yki) oncoprotein, known as the YAP coactivator in mammalian cells. The FERM domain proteins Merlin (Mer) and Expanded (Ex) are upstream components that regulate Hpo activity through unknown mechanisms. Here we identify Kibra as another upstream component of the Hippo signaling pathway. We show that Kibra functions together with Mer and Ex in a protein complex localized to the apical domain of epithelial cells, and that this protein complex regulates the Hippo kinase cascade via direct binding to Hpo and Sav. These results shed light on the mechanism of Ex and Mer function and implicate Kibra as a potential tumor suppressor with relevance to neurofibromatosis
Development of a monoclonal antibody to ITPRIPL1 for immunohistochemical diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancers: accuracy and correlation with CD8+ T cell infiltration
Introduction: Cancer biomarkers are substances or processes highly associated with the presence and progression of cancer, which are applicable for cancer screening, progression surveillance, and prognosis prediction in clinical practice. In our previous studies, we discovered that cancer cells upregulate inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor-interacting protein-like 1 (ITPRIPL1), a natural CD3 ligand, to evade immune surveillance and promote tumor growth. We also developed a monoclonal ITPRIPL1 antibody with high sensitivity and specificity. Here, we explored the application of anti-ITPRIPL1 antibody for auxiliary diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods: NSCLC patient tissue samples (n = 75) were collected and stained by anti-ITPRIPL1 or anti-CD8 antibodies. After excluding the flaked samples (n = 15), we evaluated the expression by intensity (0-3) and extent (0-100%) of staining to generate an h-score for each sample. The expression status was classified into negative (h-score < 20), low-positive (20-99), and high-positive (≥ 100). We compared the h-scores between the solid cancer tissue and stroma and analyzed the correlation between the h-scores of the ITPRIPL1 and CD8 expression in situ in adjacent tissue slices. Results: The data suggested ITPRIPL1 is widely overexpressed in NSCLC and positively correlates with tumor stages. We also found that ITPRIPL1 expression is negatively correlated with CD8 staining, which demonstrates that ITPRIPL1 overexpression is indicative of poorer immune infiltration and clinical prognosis. Therefore, we set 50 as the cutoff point of ITPRIPL1 expression H scores to differentiate normal and lung cancer tissues, which is of an excellent sensitivity and specificity score (100% within our sample collection).Discussion: These results highlight the potential of ITPRIPL1 as a proteomic immunohistochemical NSCLC biomarker with possible advantages over the existing NSCLC biomarkers, and the ITPRIPL1 antibody can be applied for accurate diagnosis and prognosis prediction
Novel Absolute Displacement Sensor with Wide Range Based on Malus Law
The paper presents a novel wide range absolute displacement sensor based on polarized light detection principle. The sensor comprises of two sets of polarized light detecting systems which are coupled by pulleys. The inherent disadvantage in optic system like light source intensity drift is solved and absolute measurement with wide-range is achieved. A prototype and the relevant test bed have been built. The test results are in good agreement with expectation. Its measurement range is 540 mm, and its linearity is better than 0.05%
The insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in the Angiotensin-converting enzyme gene and cancer risk: a meta-analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in the <it>Angiotensin-converting enzyme </it>(<it>ACE</it>) gene has been implicated in susceptibility to cancer, but a large number of studies have reported inconclusive results. The aim of this study is to assess the association between the I/D polymorphism in the <it>ACE </it>gene and cancer risk by meta-analysis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A search was performed in Pubmed database, Embase database, Chinese Biomedical (CBM) database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database and Weipu database, covering all studies until August 31, 2010. Statistical analysis was performed by using Revman4.2 and STATA 10.0.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 25 case-control studies comprising 3914 cancer patients and 11391 controls were identified. No significant association was found between the I/D polymorphism and over all cancer risks (OR = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.73-1.06, P = 0.17 for DD+DI vs. II). In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, no significant association was found among Asians and Europeans for the comparison of DD+DI vs. II. In the subgroup analysis by cancer types, no significant associations were found among lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer for the comparison of DD+DI vs. II. Results from other comparative genetic models also indicated the lack of associations between this polymorphism and cancer risks.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This meta-analysis suggested that the <it>ACE </it>D/I polymorphism might not contribute to the risk of cancer.</p
Hmm word and phrase alignment for statistical machine translation
HMM-based models are developed for the alignment of words and phrases in bitext. The models are formulated so that alignment and parameter estimation can be performed efficiently. We find that Chinese-English word alignment performance is comparable to that of IBM Model-4 even over large training bitexts. Phrase pairs extracted from word alignments generated under the model can also be used for phrase-based translation, and in Chinese to English and Arabic to English translation, performance is comparable to systems based on Model-4 alignments. Direct phrase pair induction under the model is described and shown to improve translation performance.
